Let me break it down more 👇🏼
Too much just to fit in the video as Ohlone is really an umbrella term for about 40+ different tribes/bands that lived along the California coast from San Francisco Bay down to Big Sur
The Awaswas people—part of the Ohlone Nation—lived in the Santa Cruz County portion of the Santa Cruz Mountains for over 10,000 years. They lived in territories marked by watersheds with ridgelines as boundaries.
The Awaswas maintained regular trade networks with regional cultures before the Spanish colonists began settling in the area from the 18th century.
Tribes and villages of the Santa Cruz Mountains:
🌲Achista (tentatively included Acsaggis)– Santa Cruz Mountains, present-day Boulder Creek, and Riverside Grove
🌲Chalumu – current location of city of Santa Cruz
🌲Chaloctac – around Loma Prieta Creek
🌲Chitactac – Santa Cruz Mountains and/or Santa Clara Valley
🌲Cotoni – Pacific Coast at present-day Davenport
🌲Olpen – interior hills and valleys in Santa Cruz Mountains, La Honda Creek, Corte de Madera Creek
🌲Partacsi – Saratoga Gap mountainous area, upper Pescadero Creek, Stevens Creek, and Saratoga Creek watersheds; tentatively the village and center of San Bernardino tribal groups
🌲Sayanta – Scotts Valley, Glenwood, and Laurel areas
Even thousands of years ago, these regions/ territories were just as unique as they are today.
If you’re living here or thinking about making the mountains your next home, it’s worth knowing whose land you’re standing on & the rich history that came before us!

My toxic trait? Every time I leave Boulder Creek, I deserve a little treat 🌊✨
The treat? A fun walk along West Cliff between meetings to reset my nervous system.
Hear me out about living rurally in the Santa Cruz Mountains: Target isn’t around the corner. Your favorite coffee shop (C&C!) is a 30-minute winding drive. Modern conveniences require intention.
So I’ve learned to stack my trips strategically. If I’m heading down the hill for a client showing, you better believe I’m building in time for:
• A cortisol-balancing ocean walk
• Grabbing groceries at New Leaf
• Maybe a sandwich from Seabright Deli
• Running an errand I’d have to get to eventually anyways
Living rurally isn’t about sacrificing convenience—it’s about designing a lifestyle that actually nourishes you.
The mountain life forces you to be more intentional. When you do this correctly, that’s how you avoid the burn out that comes with living a bit further away (which is one of the most common discussions I have with those looking to make the move to the mtns)!
The peace, the redwoods, the wildlife, the actual dark skies at night—it’s worth the longer drive every single time. Just don’t forget your reusable bags or that return that’s been sitting by the door 😅😂
