You finally close on your dream home in the redwoods. You’re excited. You want it perfect immediately, and trust me I GET IT! But pleeease don’t drain your bank account on things that aren’t actually essential yet.
Here’s what I often see:
Fancy gardening equipment spiral - $2,500 mower plus full Stihl chainsaw setup AND professional hedge trimmers. 6 months later? The mower doesn’t work on their slope and the chainsaw is collecting dust. Start basic. Borrow from neighbors. Get thru your first winter here to figure out what you actually need vs what looked cool at Scarborough‘s.
Furniture for every room RIGHT NOW - Dropping $8K on Wayfair before you’ve spent a season in the space? You don’t how you’ll use which rooms yet. Live in it first. Hit up estate sales. Then invest in pieces that actually matter.
The Pinterest DIY money pit - Someone gets inspired to redo the deck, retile the bathroom, build custom redwood tables - all in month one. (I’m in this boat with you guys 🙈) Hemorrhaging money at Home Depot on projects that could’ve been negotiated into the sale or aren’t even necessary yet. Live in it for a season first. Figure out what actually bugs you vs what’s just “wouldn’t it be cool if…”
The best thing you can buy in your first year? Time to learn what mountain living actually means for YOU.
